Food Security & Mobility

On The Green Summer Camp: 6,500 meals served and 3,000 rounds trips offered to youth completely free of charge since 2021.

MEALS

Access to healthy food is a cornerstone of social justice and the foundation for improving the lives of children. Food security shows kids they are safe and valued, providing a springboard for well-being and achievement. One in four children in California is food insecure, including more than 50,000 kids in Alameda County alone.

This insecurity creates negative outcomes for health, emotional development and academic performance. Significant socioeconomic disparities exist in access to quality food which has sound nutritional value; given the exposure, kids will get excited about fresh fruits and vegetables and other whole foods.

To that end, providing healthy meals that nurture bodies, spirits and minds is a major focus of summer youth programming, when school lunch programs are less available to families.

In addition to breakfasts, lunches and snacks provided by Greenway Golf, we also partner with generous local restaurants, serving cuisines from around the world to our campers. We are so grateful for their support and community spirit. Our Meal Donors

Wheels

One of the biggest barriers to participation is transportation. As well-designed as a program is, and even if it comes with no charge, it’s of no use to a child who cannot get to it. Not owning a vehicle or having a driver’s license, the price of gasoline and inflexible work schedules are major obstacles for lower-income families which all limit mobility.

With this barrier in mind, we devote significant resources to providing bus transportation to and from Corica Park for our On the Green Summer Camp participants in central, walkable pick-up points within participant communities.

There is much more work to do in this area. Currently, we are dedicating resources to our summer program with a longer-term goal of extending this offering to our year-round youth programs in the coming years.
