2023 Holiday Market
Small businesses provide a critical pathway for upward mobility for millions of entrepreneurs. They create local jobs and contribute to the unique cultures of neighborhoods and cities. 95% of businesses in California consist of fewer than 50 employees and they employ one-third of the state’s workers (Public Policy Institute of California).
In 2023 we hosted our third annual Holiday Market. The event celebrates the vibrancy of the local small business community, with a focus on Alameda, women and minority artisits, artisans and entrepreneurs. Booths are provided completely free of charge and the event has grown from 5 participants in 2021 to 25 in 2023
The Holiday Market also serves as a platform to identify and support businesses on an ongoing basis. We invite participants to apply for spots in our golf shop to exhibit and sell their products (again, at no cost). 2023 particpants included an alumni of a local Alameda high school (Encinal High) who donates a portion of her proceeds to her alama mater, a wildlife photographer who has lived next to Corica Park for decades and an Alameda-based sports illustrator new to golf who has created limited edition prints for our shop.
In 2024, our goal is to expand this program with a focus on two key areas:
The Arts: Skyrocketing Bay Area rents have displaced thousands of small busineees. They have had an especially adverse impact on local artists, and we will making a push to identify and create opportunities for more artists to display and sell their work at Corica Park.
Minority-owned Golf Businesses: As a minority-owned business, unlocking the potential of the game and the space, not just for players, but in all facets of the industry, is near to our hearts. Women and minority-owned small businesses face significant opportunity gaps, and are more likely to struggle accessing resources for success, including startup capital, growth funding, and other forms of business support. We will be on the lookout for smaller golf apparel and equipment brands to introduce Corica Park’s golfers to a new generation of retailers who are bringing a fresh new perspective to the sport and creating products that speak to a diverse cross-section of people.
